The Vista-Dome California Zephyr / Western Pacific. Circa 1950. 38 x 23". Unbacked. A. [With]: The California Zephyr in Feather River Canyon. Circa 1950s. 21 ? x 17 5/8". A pair of scarce posters for the California Zephyr, in its day dubbed ?the most talked about train in America." The 2,400-mile route crossed from Oakland to Chicago, and the train made its inaugural run on March 20, 1949. The train was equipped with Vista-Dome cars, allowing riders on the so-called ?rail cruise" to take in beautiful scenery through the West, including the Rockies. On board were ?Zephyrettes" ? rail's answer to the airline stewardess. In 1970, the California Zephyr made its last run and the operation ceased. These posters were created around 1950 and sent to passenger stations and travel agents. These examples were owned by a former WP public relations manager, and a retired WP railroad conductor.
