THOREAU, Henry David (1817-1862). The Writings of Henry David Thoreau. Boston and New York: Houghton Mifflin and Company, 1906. 8vos. Illustrated with frontispieces and tinted plates throughout. Complete in 20 volumes. Publisher's full green buckram, printed paper labels on spines. MANUSCRIPT EDITION, #501/600 COPIES SIGNED BY THE PUBLISHER, WITH AN ORIGINAL LEAF OF MANUSCRIPT IN THOREAU'S HAND TIPPED-INTO VOLUME I. Leaf has text on both sides, and appears to be half of a larger sheet.

This sheet seems to be an early draft of a portion of Life Without Principle (1863), in which an earlier version of a famous quote from that work is present: "I chance to know but 2 or 3 intellectual men who are yet so broad a truly liberal-unpledged [?] any institution in case riot [?] I can think aloud in 'their' society..." The later, corrected famous quote that appeared in print is: "I hardly know an intellectual man, even, who is so broad and truly liberal that you can think aloud in his society..."

Condition

Boards and spines toned and rubbed, some occasional edgewear, a few joints and gutters starting, endleaves and text toned, several text leaves unopened. Still, a very good set.
