Tampa (Ray Sugden). Thurston the Magician Presents Tampa England?s Court Magician. Cleveland: The Otis Litho. Co., ca. 1923. Lithographed window card bearing a portrait of Tampa with imps perched on his shoulders, whispering in his ears. 22 x 14". Significant chipping and tears with losses throughout, inpainting to closed tears affecting image; Text in wax pastel to upper margin ?Clifford/Thursday, Friday, Saturday.? C-. Linen backed. Scarce. Howard Thurston hired two magicians to represent him and take out units of his show in the 1920s. The first was Dante ? Harry August Jansen ? who had worked behind the scenes for Thurston for years. The second was Ray Sugden, who, under the name of Tampa, toured only briefly under Thurston?s sponsorship. As a result, theatrical advertising and lithographs for Tampa are scarce.
