[TIGHT ROPE]. [SATIRE]. Paye qui Tombe. [Amsterdam: Widow of J. Van Egmont, 1746]. Engraving by Romeyn de Hooghe (1645 - 1708) depicts a satire on Prince Edward Charles and his attempts to restore the house of Stuart to the British throne, likening the political events of the period to a failed circus performance; numbered captions [trimmed from this example] explain the scene, calling out various characters, some representing entire countries (as the ?spectators? watching the scene unfold), others embodying political players of the era, with still more attempting to cross the tight rope at the center of the circus tent. Trimmed to 16 x 14 ??. Old creases with small tears, light soiling. Likely a later impression of a print first published in 1689. See BM 1868,0808.3394-5.
