[UFOs & PARANORMAL]. OBSEQUENS, Julius. De Prodigiis Liber ["Book of Prodigies"]. Stockholm: Johannis Beuns Bibliopolae, 1679. Small 8vo. Two parts bound in one. Copper engraved frontispiece (engraved "Amstelodami Ex Officina Henrici Et Theodori Boom 1679"); woodcut printer's device on title-page, headpiece and tailpiece, initial letters. [14], 156, [32, indices] pp. Text in Latin. Contemporary full stiff vellum, yapp edges, contemporary ink titles to spine. LATER EDITION OF A WORK FIRST PRINTED IN 1508.

Obsequens, a Roman writer, is thought to have lived in the middle of the fourth century A. D. This is the only work attributed to him. It is also believed that the work does not contain his personal eyewitness account of the phenomena described, as they took place nearly 400 years before he was born. Overall, the book recounts 132 wonders and portents, including UFO activity (it describes unusual activities in the skies), and human deformities.

Condition

Front cover with chip to fore-edge, some rubbing, soiling, foxing to binding, bookseller's description affixed to rp. Ink signatures and notes on title-page and throughout the first part (the marginalia appear to be in the hand of one of the previous owners who have inscribed the title-page - inscriptions dated 1680 and 1722), pencil and ink notations on endleaves. Very good.
