Hard stock paper and silk menu measuring 3 7/8" x 6 1/4" closed, and 6 1/4" x 7 5/8" opened. The menu, dated October 15, 1880, is from Young's Hotel in Boston, Massachusetts. Grant was staying at the hotel while supporting the Republican nominee for President James A. Garfield. Grant had been a hopeful in 1880, but lost the nomination to Garfield after 36 ballots at the Republican National Convention. While in Boston he attended a political reception at the Middlesex Club giving his support to the GOP Standard Bearer. On the inside cover it reads "Complimentary to Gen. U.S. Grant by the Republican State Committee". Former President Grant has boldly signed his name on the front "U.S. Grant". The fare being offered on the menu was quite extravagant, it included lobster, duck, turtle soup and partridge. This piece is a must not only for the collector of Presidential autographs, but for menu collectors alike.

Small damp stain on the verso, which does not affect the appearance of the piece. Grant's signature is bold and dark.
