UPWARD, Allen [George] (1863-1926). The Discovery of the Dead. London: A.C. Fifield, 1910. 8vo. 190, [2], [16, ads] pp. Publisher's illustrated blue cloth stamped gilt in original dust jacket. FIRST EDITION DATED 1910 IN ORIGINAL DUST JACKET, LIKELY THE ONLY SURVIVING COPY.
George Allen Upward's reputation as a "forgotten genius" owes much to Ezra Pound, who included Upward in the first Imagist anthology in 1914 and made several mentions of Upward in his work, including the Cantos. Upward lived and worked as a barrister in Cardiff, where he published several volumes of poetry along with occult fiction and esoteric investigations. His self-published 1907 novel contains the first credited use of the word "Scientology," perhaps inspiring L. Ron Hubbard.
