This is a copy of the original c. 1606 painting by the Dutch artist, which was in the collection of King Charles I of England, Scotland, and Ireland (1625 ? 1649) and is now in the Royal Collection Trust, Buckingham Palace. The shell is likely an Indian volute shell, a frequent addition to 17th century paintings as precious objects and a representation of mortality. Surface dirt, paint loss, stretcher marks, scratches in areas, abrasions, craquelure, dents in areas with some resultant paint loss. Areas of white house paint splatter. Canvas torn in mid and bottom portions, largest measuring approximately 1". Canvas relined. 31 ? x 25 x 1 ?" unframed.
