VAN VOGT, A[lfred] E[lton] (1912-2000). Slan. Sauk City, Wisconsin: Arkham House, 1946. 8vo. 216, [1, limitation] pp. Publisher's black boards stamped gold in original unclipped ("$2.50") dust jacket. FINE FIRST EDITION, FIRST PRINTING OF VAN VOGT'S FIRST NOVEL.

The seminal science fiction novel, about "mutants in a time far hence," was first serialized in Astounding Science Fiction in 1940. "Slans" are the fictional race of superbeings featured; the name quickly gave rise to the popular sci-fi slogan "Fans are Slans," comparing sci-fi readers to van Vogt's persecuted super-race.
