Elaborate woodcut architectural border on title-page, each leaf within woodcut border. Three full-page woodcut illustrations, woodcut floral device on final leaf. Quarter later stiff vellum over pink cloth boards, pink decorative endpapers, edges stained yellow. FIRST EDITION OF GIOLITO'S TRANSLATION OF SANNAZARO'S LONG POEM ABOUT THE VIRGIN MARY. 

Condition

Vellum spine and boards soiled, text a bit toned, thumbsoiled, title-page apparently trimmed a bit close at margins, hinges reinforced. Very good.

Sannazaro (1458-1530) was born in Naples of a family of noble Spanish birth. As a poet, he was patronized by Frederick, King of Naples, and he accompanied that monarch in his exile to France. His best known work is the pastoral poem, Arcadia, which is esteemed as a model of elegance and purity of verse. Del parto Vergine... is an epic poem depicting the birth and life of the Virgin Mary, and is one of the cornerstones of Marian literature. Adams S332. Bongi, Giolito, II, pp. 488-489.
