Contemporary engraved image of Washington in robes pasted at bottom of subscriber?s list. 1 p. advertisement for Solomon Cotton at end. With two-line original correction on p. 282 as noted by Sabin. Original text block disbound with contemporary sheepskin case, retains original back strip and label (lacks front flyleaf; title page and advertisement sprung, title leaf has small tear with void, toning, offsetting from text). FIRST EDITION, including exchanges between Washington and the Jewish congregations of Newport, Philadelphia, Charleston, and Richmond, in which he reaffirms his commitment to religious freedom; in a letter to Moses Seixas Washington writes, ?the government of the United States...requires only that they who live under its protection should demean themselves as good citizens in giving it on all occasions their effectual support.
