Numerous plates and ads inserted throughout. The War of the Worlds is illustrated in the text by Warwick Goble. [iv], [363]-708; [iv], [3]-752 pp. Volume I begins with April, 1897 where The War of the Worlds serialization begins, this is bound without the January-March 1897 issues (The War of the Worlds is complete); volume II is complete, finishing The War of the Worlds. This appearance preceded the first book (English) edition by a year (the American appearance in The Cosmopolitan Magazine was issued simultaneously). The War of the Worlds appears monthly starting April, 1897 and concluding December, 1897. This science fiction novel was one of the first novels in which extraterrestrials are in armed conflict with humans, and is still the standard by which such stories are measured. Its popularity has hardly diminished over the years, and it has been in print continuously since 1897.
