[WESTERN AMERICANA]. HORN, Tom (1860-1903). Life of Tom Horn Government Scout and Interpreter Written by Himself. Together with His Letters and Statements by His Friends. A Vindication. Denver: Published (for John C. Coble) by The Louthan Book Company, [1904]. 8vo. Illustrated with 13 plates. 317 pp. Publisher's pictorial dark gray wrappers

Condition

Minor rubbing, spine with faint creases, front hinge starting. Bright and fine, almost as new. FIRST EDITION, PAPERBACK ISSUE (issued simultaneously as the hardcover, no priority). On the ffep. is a later pencil note indicating that this copy was owned by Americana dealer Fred Rosenstock, and later The Gene Autry Museum (eventually selling it to a book dealer). Horn wrote this book whilst in jail, waiting for execution (he was hanged in 1903, and this book was published posthumously). Horn was a scout, Pinkerton agent, cowboy, soldier, and gunman (credited with 17 killings). He was executed for the murder of Willie Nickell, a participant of a range war, and, to this day, some people believe Horn to be innocent of this murder.
