William Seward: Salt Print Photograph From 1860. 5 1/4" x 7 1/4" salt print photograph on a 10 1/4" x 13 1/2" titled mount reading "Hon. Wm. H. Seward". This was likely issued during the 1860 campaign as Seward was a hopeful for the Presidency. There is a Lincoln mate to this Seward image with the same style titled mount.

Seward lost the nomination at the 1860 Republican National Convention to Abraham Lincoln after leading on the first ballot, but falling short on the third ballot. Seward did go on to become Lincoln's Secretary of state, and was nearly assassinated on the night of April 14, 1865.

While the Lincoln image appears from time to time, this is the first Seward example we know of being offered at auction.

Condition

Edge wear at top right corner, closed 1 1/4" tear at bottom right of the mount. Else a fine example.
