Wollheim (1914-1990) was a writer and editor, and is credited as being one of the founders of horror/scifi fandom. He founded The Futurians, the first recognized science fiction fan club, in 1926. He also organized the first science fiction convention in 1936. He is also credited for establishing the fantasy fandom in the United States by issuing the pirated version of The Lord of the Rings, with the resulting controversy and interest causing Houghton Mifflin to issue authorized versions of this trilogy and other fantasy texts. The Phantagraph was originally issued under various titles, including: The International Science Fiction Guild's Bulletin, Bulletin of the Terrestrial Fantascience Guild, and others. This is the earliest American fanzine and surviving issues are exceedingly rare.
