['ZINES]. [LOVECRAFT, H. P., subject]. Macabre, Issues #6-#10. [New Haven, CT: Joseph Payne Brennan, 1960-1962]. 8vos. Five issues. Publisher's staple-bound wrappers. FIRST EDITIONS OF THIS SCARCE LOVECRAFT/HORROR FANZINE
The editor, Joseph Payne Brennan (1918-1990) was a horror writer and poet. He founded the publishing imprint, Macabre House, with Macabre magazine being one of its publications. Macabre had a run of 23 issues, ending in 1976. According to horror publisher, Donald M. Grant, "together with its companion magazine, Essence, it [Macabre] provided the opportunity and the encouragement for publication of poems and stories by writers seeking recognition in a period that lacked a vehicle for development." This magazine is highly prized by collectors, and several stories from Macabre are considered essential to Lovecraft's Cthulhu mythos.
