Zulu Isicholo. South Africa, ca. 20th century. Mixed media including human hair, ochre, twine, cloth. Isicholo is a traditional Zulu hat for a married woman, developed from a 19th century hairstyle. Crafted from a basketry base and covered in human hair dyed with red ochre. Wear to rim, allowing basketry base to be visible. Good condition for age. Diameter 20 ? x 3 ?".
