For My People is Walker's first collection of poetry. It is considered to be one of the most important books of poetry of the Chicago Black Renaissance, along with Gwendolyn Brooks' A Street in Bronzeville. Walker went on to become a literature professor at what is now Jackson State University. She established the Institute for the Study of History, Life, and Culture of Black People, (now known as the Margaret Walker Center).
