Modern bookplate of J. O. Edwards on fp. Includes a 94-line elegy by Ambrose Philips (1674-1749), then an undergraduate at St. John's College. This was his first appearance in print. He went on to a successful career as a poet, dramatist, translator and journalist. He came to be mockingly called "Namby Pamby" as a result of his trochaics for children, but Johnson admired his juvenile poems and said that he was "eminent for bravery and skill with the sword."
