CAPOTE, Truman (1924?1984). Autograph letter signed (?T. Capote?) to the author James Leo Herlihy, Costa Brava, Spain, 22 August 1960. 1 page, small 4to (267 x 203 mm), creased, with original hand-addressed envelope, torn at outer edge. Capote praises Herlihy?s new book (?All Fall Down?) that he sent to him, writing: ?It is a pleasure, one rarely provides, to praise what is praiseworthy. Yes, your book is funny and moving [?] and I doubt that Clinton, that Benny-Benny, Mr. and Mrs. Williams, will ever be entirely dislodged from my head [?] I hope the book has had the reception it deserves, and in any event send you my own warmly felt congratulations?. Primarily known as a playwright, James Leo Herlihy?s debut novel was ?All Fall Down? (1960) which would later be adapted into a film in 1962 directed by John Frankheimer. Herlihy would go on to write his most famous novel ?Midnight Cowboy? in 1965 which was adapted onto the screen in 1969, winning an Academy Award for Best Picture.
