[COSMOLOGY]. TOULMIN, G. H. (1754-1817). The Eternity of the Universe. Philadelphia: Printed for the Publisher, J. Coates, Jr., 1830. 12mo. 113 pp. Publisher's (?) full green cloth, spine lettered in gilt. THE RARE FIRST AMERICAN EDITION OF THIS BOOK ARGUING AGAINST FINITE CREATION. Toulmin argues that the universe is in a constant state of flux, continually decaying and elevating in cycles. He argued that the universe and Earth had no beginning and no end. Many of his ideas have since been disproved, but he was an early proponent of an alternate creation of the universe and Earth, denying the creation story as told in the Old Testament.
