CRAWFORD, F[rancis] Marion (1854-1909). Wandering Ghosts. New York: Macmillan Company, 1911. 8vo. [v], [1]-302, [10, ads], [1, blank] pp. Frontispiece. Publisher's green cloth stamped and lettered gilt. FIRST AMERICAN, FIRST PRINTING OF THIS IMPORTANT COLLECTION OF GHOST STORIES.
The posthumous volume gathers together some of Crawford's most famous ghost stories, including "The Upper Berth," first published in The Broken Shaft: Tales in Mid-Ocean in 1885, and "The Screaming Skull," published in Collier's in 1908, now anthologized as classics of the genre. M. R. James, often called the master of ghost stories, esteemed them in "Some Remarks on Ghost Stories": "Marion Crawford and his horrid story of 'The Upper Berth," which (with 'The Screaming Skull' some distance behind) is the best in his collection of Uncanny Tales, and stands high among ghost stories in general." Housed in clamshell box.
