With an Introduction. by Dr. James M'Cune Smith. New York and Auburn: Miller, Orton & Mulligan, 1855. 8vo. 3 inserted plates including frontispiece, each with tissue guard. [2, blank], 464, [4, ads] pp. Publisher's full black cloth, boards ruled in blind with blind central ovals, spine ruled and lettered in gilt, yellow endleaves. FIRST EDITION OF DOUGLASS' SECOND OF FOUR AUTOBIOGRAPHIES. 

This is Douglass' second autobiography and slave narrative, preceded only by the 1845 Narrative, on one of the most significant Americans of the 19th century. Several of his essays included in the Appendix including “Letter to his Old Master” and “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?”. One of the ads in the rear is for Northup's Twelve Years a Slave.

Condition

Recased, joints cracking, extremities of spine and boards worn and chipped with some color correction (with some minor associated soiling to edges of text block), hinges starting, endleaves wrinkled, toned, and foxed, pencil ownership signature on ffep., text a bit toned, occasionally soiled, foxed, creased, several gutters overopened or starting, tissue guards foxed and creased, tissue guard opposite frontispiece torn. Still, very good.
