FIRST EDITION, FIRST PRINTING IN THE UNCOMMON DUST JACKET, INSCRIBED BY HEYWARD ON A LABEL AFFIXED TO THE FP.: "Inscribed for Thomas C. McNally with the regards of DuBose Heyward" (label a bit smeared). With McNally's dated signature (Oct 1925) and bookplate on front endleaves.
This novel was the basis for the stage play and George Gershwin opera (Porgy and Bess, both of which he adapted with his wife, Dorothy). The Gershwin opera was adapted for the 1959 film, starring Sidney Poitier, Dorothy Dandridge, Sammy Davis, Jr., and Pearl Bailey, and directed by Otto Preminger. It was nominated for numerous awards, winning the Golden Globe for Best Picture-Musical.

Cloth rubbed and lightly discolored, gilt on spine a bit rubbed, corners a bit bumped, endleaves offset and foxed, text lightly toned, a few gutters overopened; jacket spine a bit toned, jacket edges lightly chipped, a few short tears, jacket lightly creased, verso of jacket spine with tape repair, light rubbing, soiling, minor edgewear. Very good.
