DOYLE, Sir Arthur Conan (1859-1930). The Lost World. London: Hodder and Stoughton, [1912]. 8vo. [vii +] 319pp. Frontispiece and 8 monochrome plates. Original blue cloth ruled in white and stamped in gilt with pictorial dust jacket. FIRST ENGLISH TRADE EDITION, IN THE EXCEEDINGLY RARE AND VIRTUALLY UNOBTAINABLE ORIGINAL DUST JACKET depicting Arthur Conan Doyle disguised as Professor Challenger. One of two copies we have seen. The book edition was published on 15 October 1912, the serialization in Strand Magazine having started in April the same year. The Lost World is considered the author’s most celebrated work outside the Sherlock Holmes canon. Green and Gibson A37a.

Condition

Dust jacket with substantial soiling and chipping, including professional restoration and reinforcement. "1912" in pen at spine. Minor spotting throughout. "J.E. Diamond" bookplate with discoloration to ffep. Very Good.
