[EVANS, Gerritt] ?A Retired Professional," pseudo.?How Gamblers Win.?New York: Dick & Fitzgerald, 1868. Cloth-backed pictorial boards. Illustrated. 12mo. p. [4] ads., 112, [20] ads. Nice firm copy, board edges bumped and rubbed. Toole Stott 395.One of the earliest American works to describe the techniques of crooked gamblers, and perhaps the first to focus heavily on cheating in poker. Within a few years of the publication of the first edition (in 1865), the work was reprinted by Dick & Fitzgerald in the form offered here, who credited the author anonymously as ?A Retired Professional," after which it became one of the most widely disseminated books on ?advantage" play of the century, running through multiple editions and bindings.
