GREEN, Jonathan Harrington (1813-1887).?Gambling Unmasked! Or the Personal Experience of the Reformed Gambler.?New York: Burgess, Stringer & Co., 1844. FIRST EDITION. Modern green buckram, spine lettered and ruled gilt. Woodcut frontispiece, woodcut plates. 12mo. Mild foxing. Good. Before his twenty-fifth birthday, Green developed a reputation as a prosperous and highly successful riverboat gambler on the steamers of the mighty Mississippi. But by the age of thirty he had reformed and began a new career as an anti-gambling crusader. The memoirs he penned about his time as a card sharp were developed in concert with his work as a lecturer on the evils of the gaming table. Green's books were printed in several editions by various publishers, mostly before the American Civil War, and while claims have been made that his old habits of crooked gambling never truly left him (he occasionally fleeced some who attended his anti-gambling lectures in ?friendly" card games), Green reportedly died a pauper.
