GODFREY, Edward Settle (1843-1932). Autograph Letter Signed. Cookstown, N. J., June 1, 1916. Addressed ?My dear Albert [?]:" Signed ?E. S. Godfrey" on p. 3. 1 4to page and 2 8vo pages on one folding 4to leaf of plain white paper. Approximately 10 x 8" unfolded. Mild toning, 1 horiztontal crease and 2 vertical creases, some rubbing. Fine. An excerpt: ?I think I know who wrote in, as I sent a copy of the Times to the family of a famous 4th Cavalry-man ? Saturday June 10 I go to West point for my class reunion, as I am class president. I could not stay away?" Godfrey was a lieutenant under General George Custer, commanding the 7th Cavalry Regiment, and was a survivor of the Battle of Little Big Horn (1876). He later commanded the 9th Cavalry Regiment during the Battle of Wounded Knee (1890). In 1877, he led troops at the Battle of Bear Paw against Chief Joseph, despite being severely wounded. It was this action for which he was awarded the Medal of Honor in 1894. He retired as a Brigadier General in 1907. He wrote several accounts of the Battle of Little Big Horn, shaping public perceptions about Custer. From the renowned personal collection of Dr. George D. Lacy. Measurements: 10 x 8".
