GORDON-CUMMING, C.F. The Inventor of the Numeral Type for China. London: Downey & Co. Ltd., 1898. 8vo. Yellow cloth stamped and lettered black. Black endsheets. Frontispiece portrait, plates. One tip-in. This work is a record of braille-like type devised to teach "illiterate Chinese both blind and sighted Chinese" how to read and write.
With Houdini's engraved bookplate tipped to the front free endpaper. Below the plate, the book has been INSCRIBED AND SIGNED BY HOUDINI: "Bot Edinboro [sic] Scotland Feb 25/1920. To Gladys from your Bro. Houdini."
Carrie Gladys Weiss, Houdini's sister, was the youngest of his siblings, and was blind almost from birth. She lived with the Houdinis for years, but little has been written about her life, or her relationship with her famous brother.
