Viertel (1920-2007) was a close friend of Hemingway?s and an accomplished writer, having written the screenplays for two of his novels, The Sun Also Rises and The Old Man and the Sea. He also wrote the screenplay for the classic film, The African Queen. He was also a successful novelist, one of which, White Hunter, Black Heart was adapted by him for film (directed by and starring Clint Eastwood).
