HEMINGWAY, Ernest (1899-1961), association]. Typed Letter Signed to His Brother, Leicester (nicknamed ?Baron?). Sun Valley Idaho, Nov. 2 [1956]. On plain white paper, with place, date, and signature at bottom in pink ink. Approximately 11 x 8 ??. Toned, faintly dampstained, 2 vertical and 1 horizontal creases, a few short marginal tears at creases, 2 small holes along the lower right crease. Good. A warm and friendly letter, written to his younger brother, Leicester (1915-1982), whom he loved and admired. Some excerpts: ?What a lousy break. I?d been ntending to write you ever since you sent me that swell letter with the I00. bucks enclosed but I s ppose it was on account of emotionally not being up to the great [crossed out] strain of acknowlegeing dough returned. S uch moments been so rare in my life that had it not been a cashiers check would have framed it?? ?Sure you can take the Gatcho as and however it is. You can?t have the Graflex but you can take that other one ? forget the name. Itis a hell of a good camera and the pictures are large enough?? ?I know Jake is a good guy and useful but be careful about takeing too large and over-crowding a party all of whom you would have to support. It is the Aguila D? Oro or Dorado or whatever not the Normandie. The Normandie is a nice ship though at that. Never liked the Queen Mary.? ?Am into the 90,000 s (words not sales) on the book. Gets longer all the time? hen this week a swell guy (best friend out here) Gene Van Guilder got himself shot and killed duck hunting [crossed out] (I wasn?t along) and have had to bury him; look after widow (no insurance and she really loved him (always bad) S o have not had good work week. Must get at it again soons finish this letter.? At the end, ?Caught a 549 marlin of Havana this summer and about twenty some others fishing only Sundays. [in pink ink:] Best always kid Ernie.? Tragically, Leicester also took his own life when his Diabetes got unmanageable. A superb letter, showing Hemingway?s warmer and more loving side. Measurements: 11 x 8 ??.
