HEMINGWAY, Ernest (1899-1961). Hemingway Sample Signature Sheet, with all 5 Signature Examples in His Hand. [N.p., ca. October, 1949]. On white laid-paper. Approximately 4 x 8?. Creased, trimmed at bottom, some edgewear, soiling, foxing, one hole in center. Very good. 8 signature examples, 6 in ink, 2 in pencil. Some additional markings by him. ?Mister Papa.?, ?Ernest? [2 different examples], ?Ernie?, ?Papa?, ?Priest?, and 2 ?Ernest Hemingway? (both in pencil). Getting ready for his trip to Europe in November, Hemingway wanted his assistant, Nita (Juanita ?Nita? Jensen, his house manager of his home in Cuba), to be able to sign some dictated letters in his absence, so he gave her this set of examples of 5 of his different signatures to copy. On several the pen point caught in the flimsy paper, causing the ink to splatter and making some examples shaky, needing to be repeated. He used pencil to write out his formal signatures, thus avoiding the problems with the ink. Nita kept this sheet in her stenographic notebooks for her reference. This should not cause consternation to the Hemingway autograph market, as he would often alert the recipient that the signature would be in her hand and not his. Hemingway would occasionally ask her to write full autograph letters on his behalf (which she did), and he also asked her to sign checks, which she refused to do. Measurements: 4 x 8?.
