A FRIENDLY LETTER TO GINGRICH, IN WHICH HEMINGWAY DESCRIBES ACCIDENTALLY SHOOTING HIMSELF IN THE LEGS, AND LATER DISCUSSES BULLFIGHTING IN SPAIN. "Thanks very much for your letter and the check. It came just as was leaving in the boat. Your letter is on the boat as I cant answer it in detail but will get it and do so. Because of some nonsense that havent time to describe in detail now (no one's fault No carelessness simply idiotic bad luck) I was shot in the calves of both legs just flesh wounds of no imortance but Dr. doesnt want to extract the bullet in left leg is where it cant do any harm. If no infection by Thursday (this is Monday) are o. k. and will leave for Bimini on Thursday. Still have time to do you Bimini piece or will write one here before I leave. Wounds clean so far. Took anti-tetanus - nothing for you to worry about... Am damned sorry your book didnt sell better but that is to be expected - what is important is that you had a wonderful press on it and that you are getting good on the 2nd book. The 2nd one is where the pay-off counts (if it comes)... I can write you a piece On Being Shot Again a Gulf Stream Letter if nothing else turns up - or if it should turn out that cant go-..." Gingrich's first book referred. to here is Cast Down the Laurel (1935). Hemingway's article, On Being Shot Again, appeared in the June, 1935 issue of Esquire.
