[HOUDINI] Metamorphosis Trunk Purchased from Beatrice Houdini. A vintage green traveling trunk bound with metal strapping and corners, cleverly gimmicked to withstand inspection, but which allows the magician and his assistant to change places while one is outside the trunk and the other is locked inside. This transformation effect takes place with great rapidity, in a manner of three or four seconds. This trunk is a ?back loading" model, and remains in good working condition. 36 x 27 x 29". Well-worn from considerable use and travel, with rusting, rubbing, chips, and losses to cloth, and with the original leather handles perished. Still, a well-preserved example of this classic stage illusion popularized by Harry Houdini and obtained by the consignor's family from his widow, Beatrice. This trick trunk, widely known as the Metamorphosis illusion, was popularized by Harry Houdini around the turn of the twentieth century. A Hutchinson, Kansas News Herald article dated April 8, 1956 indicates that Mr. Kuhns purchased the trunk from Beatrice Houdini, and pictures his son beside the box along with members of his family.
