Emma, Lady Hamilton (1765-1815) was married to Sir William Hamilton (to whom this title is dedicated), and was a well-known and popular courtesan and mistress to several prominent men, including Lord Horatio Nelson. These "Attitudes" were a series of classical poses by Lady Hamilton, based upon Sir William's and her admiration of classical motifs. She would do live performances of these poses for various important figures of the day, including Goethe; this style of performance became an art form.
