Small 8vo. Woodcut title-page with pictorial border. [9 ff.], 808 pp., [12 ff.] Half title present. Bound in contemporary full pigskin, boards ruled and paneled in blind, four raised bands, edges of text stained red (probably stained later). FIRST EDITION OF THIS LATIN TRANSLATION BY MARTINO MARTINEZ OF THE SECOND VOLUME OF "HISTOIRE DES CHOSES PLUS MÉMORABLES ADVENTURES..." 

This book gives a comprehensive picture of Jesuit missionary efforts up to 1610. It contains valuable information on colonial history, geography, ethnography gathered from Spanish and Portuguese sources. Some of the places described include the Congo, Angola, Ethiopia, Turkey, Mongolia, China, and, most importantly, Brazil.

Condition

Binding worn, soiled, spine toned, corners bumped, most likely recased, front hinge starting, text toned, offset, soiled, somewhat foxed, several leaves creased, early ink notation at bottom of title-page, some soiling to first few leaves, 3 different sets of ink notations on half-title, bookplate on fp. A very good example of this rare book.
