John Quincy Adams: Anti-Jackson Coffin Handbill. One of the numerous "Coffin Handbills" issued against Andrew Jackson by supporters of Adams in the bitter Election of 1828, featuring seventeen coffins to represent the soldiers executed on Jackson's orders during the War of 1812, titled "A Brief Account of Some of the Deeds of General Jackson." Some 27 different versions of the form have been identified. One example accuses Jackson of adultery; another, of cannibalism. Thus the term "Coffin Handbill" came to stand as a colloquialism for all political smear campaigns. Framed, 24 1/2 x 17 3/4"; sight 20 1/2 x 13 1/2".
