LINDSAY, Norman (Australian, 1879-1969). ?In Vain the Christian" Signed Print. London: The Chiswick Press, [ca. 1928]. Collotype print depicting a Roman triumph surrounded by revelers. Signed by Lindsay at lower left. Sight approximately 22 x 28". Matted and framed under plexiglass. Frame size approximately 35 ? x 40 ?". Print toned, foxed, some chipping, scuffing, soiling, a few creases. Good. FIRST EDITION, #11/100 COPIES OUT OF 50 COPIES FOR THE U. K. AND AUSTRALIA AND 50 COPIES FOR THE U. S. In 1927, 37 engravings were published and in 1928 Lindsay authorized Chiswick Press in London to produce approximately 30 prints which he then personally signed in the lower right-hand corner. It was the only time prints were?made before the original was destroyed in a train fire in 1941, while Rose Lindsay was in America promoting Norman's work. "In?Vain The Christian is Norman Lindsay's retort?to?Nietzsche who cried ?In?Vain the Roman", deploring? the destruction of the Roman idea by the Christian influence.? This drawing symbolizes the persistence?of the Roman Idea,?in?art and?in?life and shows that the Christian has undermined Rome's achievement,?in?vain. Surviving prints are exceedingly rare. Not examined out of frame. From the Collection of Louis A. Irmo.
