[LITERARY JOURNAL]. [COHEN, Ira, editor]. Gnaoua. Number One Spring 1964 [All Published]. [Tangier, Morocco: Ira Cohen, 1964]. 8vo. Illustrated with one fold-out and four black and white photographic plates. [104] pp. Publisher's perfect-bound printed magenta wrappers. FIRST EDITION OF THE ONLY ISSUE OF THIS RARE AND IMPORTANT COUNTERCULTURE LITERARY JOURNAL BY EXPATRIATES IN MOROCCO. This journal has an association with Bob Dylan, with a copy of this journal (not this specific copy) appearing on the mantel behind him on the front cover of his album, Bringing It All Back Home (Dylan insisted that this journal be on the cover, as it influenced him). Some contributors include: William S. Burroughs, Brion Gysin, Allen Ginsberg, Michael McClure, Alfred Jarry, and more. "GNAOUA after Black African sect in Morocco known for ecstatic dancing and possession trances..." (from [p. 1]).
Condition
Spine and edges of wrappers sunned, spine rolled, torn, and with tape reinforcement partially covering joints, corners bumped and creased, front hinge cracked, text a bit toned, corners occasionally creased, previous owner's gift inscription on front inner wrapper, dated 1964. Still, a very good example of this rare journal.
