Counselman wrote short stories that appeared in various pulps and other magazines. One of the stories in Half in Shadow is "The Three Marked Pennies," which originally appeared in Weird Stories Magazine, and is one of the three most popular stories that appeared in that magazine, based on letters from readers. Another story in this collection, "Seventh Sister," is a rare example of a Voodoo horror story written by a woman. Her horror stories are an unusual mix of fright and tongue-in-cheek humor.
