[MANUSCRIPT NEWSPAPER]. The Gem. Flushing, Ohio [The Polydephian Society], Friday April 29, 1853. Hand-written amateur newspaper. Folio. 4 pp. on one large folding sheet. Each page approximately 12 1/2 x 8".

Condition

3 horizontal creases, some toning, soiling, light wear, several tears to center fold, a few ink blots. Still, fine. The Gem is a remarkable handwritten newspaper created by the Polydephian Society of Flushing, Ohio. Dated Friday, April 29, 1853, this first issue reflects an earnest, intellectual, and moral effort by young contributors—likely students or society members—to explore topics of social improvement, morality, temperance, education, and civic responsibility. This unique 4-page issue, composed entirely in cursive manuscript, includes essays, poetry, editorials, and even an enigma puzzle. The layout is carefully ruled into columns, each brimming with handwritten content ranging from philosophical musings to reflections on America’s progress and shortcomings. The tone is thoughtful and reform-minded, with a strong emphasis on personal virtue, knowledge, and self- improvement. One article calls on readers to “Look, Read, Observe, Reflect & be satisfied,” while another apologizes for the “bad appearance” and encourages contributions from fellow members. Given its date, its youthful authorship, and the complete manuscript presentation, The Gem stands as a rare survivor of early American amateur press efforts—before mimeographs or duplicating devices were available to small groups. It is an extraordinary example of grassroots publishing, educational ambition, and antebellum civic culture.
