[MAPS]. HAHN, Johannes Theophilus (1842-1905). Original Map of Great Namaqualand and Damarland compiled from his own observations and surveys by Th. Hahn, PhD. Cape Town: Saul Solomon & Co. [bound by R. Scott], 1879. Sectioned on linen and bound in original gray cloth boards. An outstanding and scarce early map depicting the mountains, roads, and Khoekhoe settlements of South West Africa, surveyed by Johannes Th. Hahn. Hahn was a trader and Khoekhoe linguist born in Ebenhaeser, Cape Colony, in part responsible for the creation of the Palgrave Commission when local chiefs petitioned the government for protection after he invited Boer farmers to settle in north Namaland. He created this map—the first topographic map of South West Africa—after relocating to Stellenbosch in 1878. 62 1/2 x 42 1/2" unfolded. Boards 11 x 7 1/4".

Condition

Covers toned and sunned with soiling at back. Minor edge wear and spotting with few wormholes affecting image areas. "R. Scott" binding stamp to fep. Very good.
