The bone pile was a 19th-century ossuary with around 200,000 sets of remains. Families rented burial plots, and when leases were unpaid or space filled up, the bones were moved to the 30-foot-deep pile. After the Spanish-American War, soldiers viewed the site as a curiosity, taking photos and bones as souvenirs.
