[NEWSPAPERS]. [CHURCH, Benjamin (1734-1778), subject]. The Pennsylvania Evening Post. Vol. 1 No. 136. Philadelphia: December 5, 1775. 4pp. 10 x 8". ON THE ARREST OF DR. BENJAMIN CHURCH AS A BRITISH SPY, P2. Church served as the "Chief Physician & Director General" of the Continental Army under Washington when one of his encrypted letters to Lt. Gen. Thomas Gage of the British Army was intercepted in July 1775. The letter was found to be relating classified intelligence on the Continental Army. Following a military hearing, Church was convicted of treason and imprisoned in Connecticut "without use of pen, ink and paper." "Last Thursday the noted Dr. Church, some time since detected in attempting to carry on a traitorous correspondence with the ministerial rebels in Boston, was carried from this town, under a strong guard, and conducted to the interior part of the country." Church remained imprisoned until 1778, when he fell ill and was banished to the West Indies. The ship never arrived, and Church was never heard from again.

Condition

Minor spotting and edge wear. Holes to gutter from disbinding. Three horizontal and one vertical fold. Very Good.
