Condition

Some marginal toning, left margin chipped with stab-holes, one horizontal crease. Fine. ON P. 4 IS A STORY ABOUT THE FIRST USE OF ANESTHESIA IN SURGERY. "Successful Operation without Pain - Yesterday morning, Dr. Morton, Dentist, No. 19 Tremont Row, at the invitation of Dr. Haywood, visited the McLean Hospital, and administered his preparation to produce sleep, to a person to undergo the operation of the extraction of a tumor from the neck..." William T. G. Morton (1819-1868) was a dentist who first used ether to perform painless dental procedures. His success was written about in newspapers, gaining the attention of surgeons - leading to one surgeon inviting him to this first operation to use anesthetic, which took place in Massachusetts.
