Frontispieces, five folding maps (one hand-colored), six lithographed plates, and eleven wood-engraved plates. Two volumes. xvii, [1]-[386], [2, ads]; xi, [1]-[396], [16, ads] pp. Complete. Publisher's full red cloth, boards stamped in gilt and paneled in blind; both volumes rebacked to style in later red cloth, gilt, later endleaves (some rubbing to cloth, corners bumped, text and plates with occasional foxing, some toning to plates, ownership signature on inner margin of title-page in volume I). Fine.THE RARE FIRST EDITION OF RAJAH JAMES BROOKE'S ADVENTURES IN BORNEO, AND HIS SUPPRESSION OF PIRACY IN THE AREA. Brooke traveled to Borneo in 1838 pursuing his fortune. In 1841, the Malay Sultan of Brunei had invited Brooke to be the Rajah of Sarawak in perpetuity, in gratitude of Brooke's quelling a rebellion there. ?? the suppression of piracy in the Malayan Archipelago does not appear to have been among Brook's first objects, but it formed one of the main achievements of his useful life?" (DNB). The author of this title, Captain Mundy, commanded the H. M. S. Iris during this time, and cooperated with Brooke in the successful suppression of the Borneo pirate tribes.
