POWELL, Doane (active 1904 - 1951) MORRIS, Chester (1901 - 1970). Screen-Worn Face Mask from "Boston Blackie's Chinese Venture. [Los Angeles], 1949. Hand-painted laminated paper mask, made by artist Doane Powell and presented in a yellow, handled carrying case, initialed "C.M". The mask appears in the last installment of the "Boston Blackie" film series starring Chester Morris and is featured in Powell's Masks and How to Make Them.
The mask also appeared in various magic engagements during Morris's work with the Hollywood Canteen and the Hollywood Victory Committee's military efforts during WWII.
The lot also includes a 1940's "The Big Show" showcase program with annotations recalling the "Celestial Master of Mystery", Ho Chan La, act 8a, being Chester Morris, acknowledged by Dave Roth (act 4 on the program), circled also in red. That story is later later confirmed, as this showcase is also referenced in included 1965 birthday correspondence between Morris and Carl A. Fanton of Fanton Photo, as they were mutual friends of Dave Roth. The letter references their appreciation for magic, along with details of the program's journey from Roth to Fanton, and now from Fanton to Morris.
A black and white still photograph of the actor wearing the mask is also included.
Case measures 7 x 12 x 8".
