SHAW, W.H.J. (American, b. 1859 ? 20th century). ?Roscoe" the Ventriloquist Dummy. St. Louis, ca. 1900/1915. Carved wooden hands, glass eyes, and painted head. Body and clothing original. Roscoe was the dummy of magician Ermine Schley Kemp ?Kempenie" (1899 ? 1991). Lot further includes Kemp's business card, an original handwritten page of dialogue, a newspaper clipping about Kemp, and a letter from the current owner. Paint loss to hands, craquelure to face with resultant paint loss, clothes with wear and holes. Approximately 40 x 13 x 7 ?".
