Southern California Chicano Gang Scrapbook Archive. Late 1980s-early 1990s. Extensive vernacular scrapbook archive documenting the lives, relationships, parties, gatherings, and street culture of a group of young Southern California Chicano men and women during the late 1980s and early 1990s. Archive consists of 10 scrapbook pages, each with material mounted on both sides, for a total of 20 pages of content. Included are numerous original color snapshot photographs, Polaroids, photo booth strips, handwritten captions, graffiti-style inscriptions, hand signs, references to gang affiliations and neighborhoods, depictions of weapons, drinking, parties, couples, family scenes, interiors, and gatherings of young men posing together. Several pages include original handwritten notes identifying individuals by nicknames and locations, references to incarceration and “homeboys,” and original amateur drawings and prison-style artwork executed directly onto the scrapbook pages. A striking and deeply personal vernacular archive offering a rare glimpse into the daily life, relationships, identity, and visual culture surrounding alleged Chicano gang life in Southern California during the period.
