Star Wars: Return of the Jedi Sail Barge Set Construction Photographs (2). James Van Hise, photographer. 1983–84. Group of two color photographs,  depicting the large-scale Sail Barge (“sand ship”) set under construction and completed for Return of the Jedi (1983). The images show the massive practical set erected in a desert location, with visible scaffolding, framework, and crew during assembly, as well as a wider view of the completed structure used in the Tatooine sequences. Typed labels affixed to the versos read, “The Sand Ship under construction from the side which will be blind to the camera. Photo: Della Van Hise” and “The completed Sand Ship from the side not seen by the camera during shooting of the movie. Photo: James Van Hise,” with a stamped date of May 4, 1984. The photographs provide a behind-the-scenes record of large-scale effects and set construction for the Star Wars franchise. Each measuring approximately 3 1/2 x 5".
